5 Videos of Funk
Written by Suzanne on January 21, 2011 – 12:00 am -Back in the 80’s day, there was a song called Five Minutes of Funk by Whodini. It wasn’t very funky, but it was five minutes of a great rap/ hip hop tune.
I caught myself singing the lyrics to 5 Minutes of Funk the other day, which led to the idea of 5 Videos of Funk. For those of you not familiar with Funk as a music genre let’s get a breakdown from Wikipedia:
“Funk is a music genre that originated in the mid-late 1960s when African American musicians blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Funk songs are often based on an extended vamp on a single chord, distinguishing it from R&B and soul songs centered around chord progressions….
…many of the most famous bands in the genre also played disco and soul extensively. Funk music was a major influence on the development of disco music and afrobeat, and funk samples have been used extensively in genres including hip hop, house music and drum and bass. It is also the main influence of go-go, a subgenre associated with funk.”—Wikipedia
As Whodini would say, “…separate the good stuff from the junk…” Here are 5 of my favorite funky videos:
I play this video whenever someone gets on my nerves. It helps me remember how to behave on this planet. The YAY at the end of this video & The Dating Game style groovy music is fun too!
I love this video, not only because the Ohio Players really know how to get funky, but because Wolfman Jack introduces them.
If we’re gonna get funky, we’ve got to Get Down with the Soul Train dancers.
It’s not only the guys that can get down and get funky. Here’s Chaka Khan with Rufus telling us something good.
Good God! Give us those funky horns! James Brown says… “Get Up Offa That Thing”
Remember these are 5 of MY favorite funk videos. What funky songs get you up offa that thing?

5 Cool Happenings in 1970
Written by Suzanne on May 15, 2009 – 12:00 am -
Today’s The 5 on Friday is all about the year 1970 because my birthday is tomorrow May 16th. I was born in 1970. Yes that means I’m in the last year of my thirties. Do you remember the show Thirty Something?
I’m almost out of my thirty somethings so I’m celebrating this 5 on Friday with 5 Cool Happenings in 1970.
1. Isle of Wight Festival 1970
This musical event in 1970 was the largest of early music festivals. At the time, it was said to be one of the largest human gatherings in the world, surpassing the attendance at Woodstock. With a list of over 50 performers including The Doors, The Moody Blues, The Who, Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix.
Leonard Cohen performed his song “Suzanne”, how convenient was that?
For information about this year’s Isle of Wight Festival click here.
2. M*A*S*H
The movie MASH premiered in 1970. My father was in Vietnam just a few years before. For reasons he’s never fully explained, he didn’t like the movie or the television show. I’ve always been intrigued by the movie because it seemed a bit taboo at our house. Are you a MASH fan?
3. The First Earth Day
“. . . on April 22, 1970, Earth Day was held, one of the most
remarkable happenings in the history of democracy. . . ” -American Heritage Magazine, October 1993
Visit earthday.wilderness.org for more info about Earth Day
4. PBS Begins Broadcasting
I’ve been happily watching PBS since I was a kiddo. With unique programming made possible by viewers like me, such as Sesame Street, The Electric Company, Cyberchase, Arthur, Masterpiece Theater, Nature, Independent Lens, and Tavis Smiley.
In my opinion Tavis Smiley has one of the best interview shows on TV.
5. Big Bird on Time
Speaking of Sesame Street, one of my favorite characters, Big Bird, was on the cover of Time Magazine in October of 1970. Here’s a bit about Big Bird from the man who knows him best Caroll Spinney.

5 Things That Happened This Week
Written by Suzanne on December 12, 2008 – 7:06 am -R.I.P. Bettie Page
This famous pin up and fetish model from the 1950’s passed away December 11, 2008.
Modern day pin ups, photographers, and fans of this cult siren are paying respects by writing their thoughts about Bettie Page, and posting her photos on social network sites. She led an interesting life that spawned a cult following and added a novel style of sexy to pop culture.
Golden Globe Nominations
When they announce the nominees for the Golden Globes each year I realize how many movies and television shows I haven’t seen yet. The only category that I’m truly familiar with is Best Animated Feature. Hmm, can we say homeschooling housewife? If it’s not made by Pixar or DreamWorks, I probably won’t get around to seeing it until the kiddo is 18.
The Golden Globes will be held January 11th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, California live on NBC 8:00 EST
Click here for detailed information and even a countdown timer. The timer is always nice to have considering we don’t have much time to get everything done. We have to find a designer, borrow jewelry, schedule a massage and pedicure, Botox, laser peel, makeover, find the right shoes, write up a little something in case they call our name, and don’t forget a spray on tan.
Dorothy Lamour’s Birthday
Dorothy Lamour was born on December 10, 1914. After a career that lasted more than six decades in radio, movies, and the theater Dorothy passed away in Los Angeles, California on September 22, 1996.
Here she is wearing a sarong like no one else can, while performing with Veronica Lake, and Paulette Goddard in a little number called “A Sweater, a Sarong and a Peek-a-Boo Bang”:
Jennifer Anniston Poses Nude
Getting very friendly with GQ magazine, this 39 year old actress bares all in the January issue. Of course the pics and hype hit the media this week. If I looked that good naked I would have leaked the picture out on the net months ago.
Housewife in Hollywood gets a Flip Mino HD
Alright so this isn’t a big event in pop culture history quite yet but my new Flip Mino HD will change the course of this site forever. I’ll be using this exclusive HIH cam to bring my viewers exciting new features like Behind the Scenes, HIH Out and About, and interviews with more creative and talented people.
