Up A Lazy River
Written by Suzanne on January 15, 2009It’s begining to feel a lot like Spring Time here in Southern California. My friends are off to the beach, my kiddo wants to swim in the pool, and were grilling dinner outside tonight. It looks like Spring may have decided to come early. Who needs that Groundhog anyway?
Have you ever heard of Hoagy Carmichael? Well I’m sure you’ve heard many of his songs. He was a songwriter back in the “old days”, say 1930’s to the 1960′s. I love so many of his songs, Stardust, Georgia On My Mind, and one that I’m in the mood for today, Up a Lazy River.
With the sun shining, and the birds singing, I’d like to just lounge up a lazy river myself. Searching for some footage of old Hoagy I found some great nuggets of pop culture history. The one I just had to post here should really get us in the mood for some Spring Swingin’. Forget about being lazy, get on up and do the Watusi!
Here’s a more upbeat version of Up a Lazy River made for the Scopitone, also known as the Visual Jukebox:

Hoagy Carmichael is from Indiana! Woot, woot!!! “Stardust” is my absolute favorite, and I once had to sing, “Up A Lazy River” in choir, haha! Excellent springtime pick!

Have you heard Rickie Lee Jones’ version of “Up a Lazy River”? It’s good because her voice is so slurry. She sounds like she’s up a lazy river of booze!
